What is cellulite?

Cellulite is caused by connective bands (called fascia) beneath your skin which weave around your underlying fat and create dimpling above the skin.

Remember that cellulite differs from fat.

What causes cellulite?

There are many causes of cellulite.

These include dietary changes, obesity, exercise habits and genetics.

85-90 % of females after puberty have cellulite indicating that this is a physiological problem as opposed to a pathological problem. (disease related)

Since cellulite is different from fat, even very fit women will have cellulite.

Hormones, particularly estrogen, plays an important part in the formation of cellulite.

However, genetics plays the biggest role in the development of cellulite.

Can you actually get rid of cellulite?

In short, the answer is no — there is no permanent solution.

While individual dimples may disappear, if you are predisposed to cellulite, your body will just make more.

Is cellulite treatable?

Treating cellulite is possible, however, it requires a combination of treatments over several sessions in order to improve the appearance of cellulite.

Cellulite cannot be eliminated but its appearance can be improved.

What are different treatment options for cellulite?

The best options for cellulite treatment include a combination of technology-based devices such as radiofrequency and /or Erbium lasers, as well as injections.

Remember that since cellulite differs from fat, treatments that can effectively remove fat often have no effect on cellulite.

Can injections treat cellulite?

There are 2 types of injectables on the market that help the appearance of cellulite.

Sculptra®, a bio stimulant injected in the buttocks and leg areas can help the appearance of cellulite. The PLLA particles will stimulate collagen slowly over time giving the skin more support and result in a smoother appearance.

Several sessions are required to achieve desired results.

Radiesse®, a filler used for years has recently made its way as a biostimulant when injected in different body parts. This will also improve the appearance of cellulite by redensifying the skin.

Several sessions are required to achieve desired results.

What is the optimal treatment?

The best results are seen when a combination of treatments is performed.

Using both injectables and energy-based devices will further stimulate collagen on different levels, both through biostimulation and heat generating collagen remodelling.

How many treatments are required?

A series of treatments are required for both injectables and energy-based devices.

For injectables we typically require 3- 4 sessions spaced 6-8 weeks apart.

As or the energy-based devices, radiofrequency with and without lipomassage and vacuum work very well in improving the appearance of cellulite.

In addition, Erbium lasers, can also help by creating collagen remodelling through intense heat. For both of these modalities, patients require a series of 3-5 treatments approximately 1 month apart.

How long do treatments last?

This is a more difficult question to answer.

The results depend on the degree of cellulite.

A more severe case may require more sessions and results may not be as optimal as for a patient with a lesser degree of cellulite.
Results can last up to 1-2 years.

As with all treatments, maintenance is required.
