What is Botox Botox Cosmetic®

Botox Cosmetic® is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium Botulinum bacteria, which works by reducing the activity of muscles.

First discovered in 1977 for the treatment of strabismus, Botox Cosmetic® became approved to reduce dynamic wrinkles in the glabellar region in 2002. It has since been used worldwide for many years as a dynamic wrinkle eraser.

Botox Cosmetic® treatments involve injections into the muscles in order to relax their activity and therefore reduce the lines associated with active expression in the face, such as frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet.

It’s a simple, non-surgical treatment that produces noticeable improvements in frown lines and crow’s feet within a few days of the injections. The treatment is performed with a few tiny injections into the muscle under the skin. They prevent muscles from contracting, therefore diminishing skin folds overlying the injected muscles, giving you a more relaxed appearance.

How do Botox Cosmetic® injections work?

Botox® injections are directed at the facial muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. They target dynamic wrinkles caused by repeated muscular contractions such as frowning and squinting. They work by relaxing the muscles causing the dynamic wrinkles, resulting in a more refreshed and relaxed appearance.

Continued use of these treatments softens expression lines which helps to “stop the clock” as far as the development of lines is concerned, or over time can “turn back the hands of time” as far as further deepening of lines.

Full effect of the product is noticeable within 5-7days. The treatments are quick and have no downtime.

How long do results last?

Results generally last 3-6 months although treated people have noticed longer lasting results. Treatments can be repeated at recommended intervals.

What age can you start doing neuromodulator injections?

Typically, one will start doing injections when dynamic wrinkles become visible at rest.

The average age for this varies from 25-35, but in some people, it can begin as early as age 20. The idea of prevention is to start doing these injections before the lines become imbedded in the skin to prevent them from becoming deeper and therefore more difficult to treat.

What’s the difference between the various neuromodulators on the market?

They’re all very similar. The difference is in the amount or lack of accessory proteins (toxin complex) in the preparation of the product. Dysport®, another neuromodulator, very similar to Botox® has a faster onset of action. In certain patients the results in the longevity of each product can be different. The indications for their use are otherwise exactly the same. Similarly results will be almost identical.
