Why sunscreen?

Sunscreen is the single most important skin care product you can invest in.

It’s usually not only an inexpensive investment but will protect you from photoaging, skin cancer (including melanoma), and will help maintain your investment in cosmetic laser technologies.

What’s the best sunscreen?

This is the ultimate question. There are so many sunscreens on the market that choosing the right one is confusing. Remember that the importance of a good sunscreen or sunblock is not its texture or even its SPF protection. What you need to know is that the best sunscreen (particularly the best face sunscreen) will protect you from both UVA and UVB rays.

Unfortunately this information isn’t always provides on the packaging.

Why?

UVA light causes AGING.

This includes skin discoloration, brown spots, in addition to the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibres resulting in skin laxity and solar elastosis. It is also responsible for the development of skin cancers.

UVB light causes BURNS.

This results in non protection of the skin which leads to both skin aging and cancer.

UVA and UVB both can cause skin CANCER.

Are all sunscreens safe?

NO!

NOT ALL SUNSCREENS ARE SAFE.

Why?

Many sunscreens on the market contain parabens, various preservatives and toxic UV filter chemicals called benzophenones. Other active UV filters found in sunscreens include camphor and octinoxate. These ingredients penetrate the skin to reach the blood circulation and may bind to certain dopamine and serotonin receptors in the brain. These UV filters also act as hormone disruptors.

Are they all the same?
What do you need to know?

These active chemicals are implicated in certain reproductive disorders, photoallergies, neurodegenerative disorders, childhood asthma, diabetes, obesity and some genetic disorders in lower species.

Why should you avoid these chemicals?

We should avoid these chemicals because we don’t want to use a sunscreen with ingredients that penetrate the bloodstream resulting in a possible adverse event.

Expecting and nursing mothers, babies, children, adolescents, and adults trying to conceive should naturally avoid the chemicals found in most sunscreens on the market.

So what choice do you have?

Pick a sunscreen that is safe, that will protect you against both UVA and UVB light and that will NOT enter the body and bind to receptors in the brain and other tissues.

How about SPF?

You CANNOT rely on labels with an SPF value alone. SPF is not a direct measure of UVA and UVB protection.

SPF, or sun protective factor, measures the fraction of sunburn-producing rays that reach the skin. For example, an SPF of 15 means that you can stay in the sun 15 times longer than you could without protection. This means that if your skin reddens after 15 minutes in the sun, an SPF of 15 will allow you to stay in the sun for 15 X 15 minutes.

A sunscreen’s SPF has little to do with its ability to shield you from UVA rays.

UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and are harder to block .The sunscreen will protect you from burning giving you a false sense of security that you’re protected against light transmission that causes skin cancer.

A high SPF may not really be a high SPF. Any SPF higher than 50 does not offer the extra protection its number implies. An SPF of 100 DOES NOT block 100% of the sun’s rays. The way SPF is calculated when over 50, errors are more dramatic for high SPF products.

This again gives the consumer a false sense of security.

It’s important to know that European testing for sunscreen differs from the FDA and Health Canada testing.

Studies show that very few sunscreens sold in North America would actually pass the European test for recommended sunscreen protection for UVA protection.

Wearing clothes and a hat, sitting in the shade and wearing sunglasses can be very good sunscreen with far more protection than your average sunscreen.

Why did we pick Cyberderm Sunscreen?

Cyberderm Sunscreen sunscreen was developed by 2 Canadian physicians, a husband and wife team.

Dr.Dudley, a high-risk OB gynaecologist and his wife, a dermatologist, together with a chemist developed a sunscreen that is safe in pregnancy. Their company is a result of 15 years of research on the study of sunscreens.

Their sunscreen is one of the few on the market that contains UV filters with a large molecular weight that WILL NOT penetrate intact skin. The main ingredient in this sunscreen is zinc oxide. Zinc oxide has been used in dermatology as therapy for burns, rashes and in calamine lotion. The filters are non-soluble meaning that the product will NOT wash off as easily as some other soluble filters. Therefore, this zinc oxide-based sunscreen will provide balanced protection against both UVA and UVB light rays. It is safe for use on pregnant women and babies.

If you buy one key cosmetic product for you and your children it should be a simple and safe sunscreen.

And the price is right!
